Hello, Deer!

Yesterday, my father and I visited the IIT campus in Chennai. A part of the Guindy National Park, it is classified as a "tropical dry evergreen forest". It is blessed with an amazingly rich biodiversity and is home to all kinds of exotic animals, plants and migratory birds - we saw black bucks, spotted deer, monkeys, cats, butterflies and some strange insects. I go there often, but never before with my camera since animal/wildlife photography doesn't really interest me - my father wanted to take pictures of the animals on the campus, so I decided to join inMy favourite animals were the deer, take a look :)

So gentle and sweet!
They are such posers :)

This was awesome - we found one sharpening its antlers on a tree!
One of the cutest portraits I have ever shot :)

  1. lovely! i would love it if you took more pictures of wildlife!

(i also went to Guindy and IIT campus everyday with my dad, dog and sis, for jogging, birdwatching and morning walks). We lived close by in Kotturpuram (just up the road). In the evenings we would run in the field in AC Tech College/Anna University and play football/ basketball there.

Lovely memories! I loved seeing the black buck and his harem of female bucks!
Also I loved guindy park zoo and the snake park! I highly recommend going there, however I doubt they are the same as back in the 90s!

    1. Wow Pree - that sounds so lovely! I can imagine how beautiful it must have been to jog in this campus! The black bucks are gorgeous but I dint see the female bucks. They were all too far away from me to even try taking any pictures - one of the reasons Ashwin and I aren't so keen on animal/bird photography - we'll need to invest in pretty expensive lenses coz you need to shoot from far away- and neither of us shoots frequently enough to justify the investment :( I think I went to the snake park when I was a kid, during one of my vacations to Chennai - but I dont remember much of it :)

  2. Past the Guindy zoo and snake park, there was a little (compared to a national park, but big for Chennai) animal sanctuary where we (dad, dog, friend Deepti, her dad, and a few other bird enthusiasts) would go to do early AM bird watching. Yes I am one of those bird watching geeks! And that's where the Black buck and his harem would roam. We could only see them from a distance because we don't want them to run away. However a cheap pair of binoculars was great, (many of us did not have camera's as kids in the 90's, let alone fancy one's we get today!) Even in the middle of the city in IIT and Guindy park, there was a surprising number of amazing birds to be seen.

Also just fyi animals are amazing, but the most unlikely animals can be moody- I've been chased by deer more than once, while on the job... remember the scene where Mufasa dies in the lion king. Yep. They CAN do that and they only need 2 of them to run over a person. Not getting close to them is a smart idea.
